Today’s class was spent setting up Trello and brainstorming topic for my free inquiry project! (https://trello.com/b/ednNeR7a/edci336-a01-katieheaton-free-inquiry)
I am beyond exited to start on my inquiry, as the topic I have chosen (sustainability in the classroom) is something that is deeply important to me. Needless to say, this is an expansive topic and I can’t wait to see where it takes me!
Over the course of the semester, I hope to connect with educators in the Greater Victoria Area that incorporate conscious ideas and practices into their classrooms. I have plans to visit organizations who specialize in sustainable education programs for elementary students, such as the Compost Education Center.
In addition, I plan on designing my own lesson plans around various aspects of sustainability. I hope to find ways to educate children on how overconsumption and industries such as animal agriculture impact the globe.
Last but not least, I plan on exploring zero and low waste teaching materials and how to minimize classroom waste. I hope to someday teach without any single use plastics or unnecessary waste, and will document my journey towards achieving this!
